Middle School "B" Boys Basketball
Born and raised in Raleigh. N.C. Graduated from Enloe HS, where he played basketball. Served six years in the military out of high school. Retired in 2010 after 28 years in law enforcement. Coached baseball from t-ball to high school, including Little League, AAU, USSSA and State Games of NC championships. Also coached the Raleigh Police Department to a championship in the NC Police and fire Olympics. Just completed his first year as the Middle School Boys B team head coach. SDS varsity baseball coach for three years.
The middle school boys B team ended the season with a 49-31 home loss to North Raleigh Christian Academy Tuesday. The Warriors (6-7, 6-6) trimmed an early deficit to three early in the fourth quarter before the Knights regained command down the stretch. “I was proud of the way we came back,” said coach David Simmons. “I’ve liked the way this group has battled all year. We’ve treated this as a developmental level and emphasized fundamentals and conditioning in every practice. We’ve had fun and everyone got better.” Ollie Koon led the scoring with nine points and William Watson added six.
The middle school boys B team held a 25-9 halftime lead on the way to a 38-17 victory over Magellan Tuesday at home. The Warriors raised their record to 6-5 behind a game-high 15 points from Ollie Koon. John Thagard hit three three-pointers on the way to 11 points and Jay Rittenmeyer made a pair for eight points. “It was a good all-around game for us,” said coach David Simmons, whose team is 6-5. “Our defense was good and we hit our shots.”
Vann Seagrave hit a pair of three pointers on the way to a game-high 10 points. Jay Rittenmeyer added nine as eight different players scored. “We shared the wealth tonight,” said coach David Simmons. “We moved the ball well and did a good job running time off the clock late in the game to protect the lead.” The boys are 5-4. Both teams play at Cary Academy Thursday.
The boys B team trailed St. Timothy’s 28-19 after three quarters, then battled back to tie at 28-28 before falling 44-38 Thursday at home. The Warriors hit 14 of 16 free throws in the final quarter and finished 21-17 for the game. “We practice shooting free throws at the end of every practice and it kept us in the game today,” said coach David Simmons. “Our press caused turnovers in the second half and we attacked the basket. I’m proud of our comeback.” Jay Rittenmeyer led the scoring with 15 points, including nine free throws. Grey McMahon added nine, seven from the line.
The middle school boys basketball B team ended the 2018 portion of the schedule with a 47-11 trouncing of Trinity of Raleigh Monday at home. The Warriors (4-3) led 18-5 at halftime, then exploded for 17 points in the third quarter while holding the Tigers scoreless. “We played great defense no matter who was in the game,” said coach David Simmons. “All 12 players saw the floor a lot and we made some very good passes. It’s a nice way to start a break.” William Watson led 10 Warriors in the scoring column with 10 points, while John Thagard scored eight. Ollie Koon, Hutch Marshall and Tucker Wells each scored six.
The Warriors boys B team led Cary Academy 22-15 after three quarters, then held off the Chargers for a 26-25 victory. “We survived their press in the fourth quarter, “ said coach David Simmons. “We went to a box and one defense on their hot shooter and John Thagard did a great job shutting him down. Grey McMahon hit two huge jumpers at the end to keep us in front.” Ollie Koon led the Warriors (2-3) with nine points. SDS plays at Wake Christian Monday.
The St. David’s boys B team fell, 31-17, to Wake Christian at home Thursday. The Warriors trailed 12-8 at halftime, but the Bulldogs used a full-court press to convert several steals into baskets in the second half. “We had a hard time with their press,” said coach David Simmons. “We had way too many turnovers that gave them some easy points.” Van Seagrove and Ollie Koon led St. David’s with three points each. The Warriors host Cary Academy Tuesday.
The boys B team is 2-0 after a 38-18 victory at Cary Christian Thursday. Nine Warriors scored, led by Grey McMahon with 10 and John Thagard with six, while Van Segrave was 4-4 from the free throw line. “Our defense was excellent again,” said coach David Simmons. “We turned extra chances into points and had balanced scoring.” St. David’s plays at Ravenscroft Friday.
The boys B basketball team defeated Magellan, 17-4, Tuesday in the season opener for both teams. The Warriors hit seven free throws to go along with five baskets. “Our transition defense was very good and we made some free throws,” said coach David Simmons. “It was a good way to start the season.” Ollie Koon and Jude English scored six points each to lead the scoring. St. David’s travels to Cary Christian Thursday.
