Varsity Boys Tennis
The varsity boys tennis season ended with a 5-0 loss at Coastal Christian in Wilmington Tuesday. St. David’s (3-8) qualified for the state tournament for the first time since 2015. I am incredibly proud of what the team has accomplished this year, both together and as individuals, said first-year coach Tyler Hoagland. “To even make the playoffs at all was a great accomplishment. I saw solid tennis on every court, including specific improvements by each individual that we’ve been working on all season. It was a tough end to the season, but a great accomplishment for such a young team to make the playoffs. There is enormous potential for the coming years.”
The varsity tennis Warriors finished the regular season with a 6-3 victory over Wake Christian Thursday at the Satellite Athletic Complex. The match was tied, 3-3, after singles, but St. David’s swept the doubles matches to raise their record to 3-6. “I saw some of the best tennis we’ve played all year today,” said coach Tyler Hoagland. “The hard work everyone has put in showed today and we are hopeful of continuing our season in the state tournament.” Alex Barroso (6-0, 6-0), Joseph Pisciotta (6-2, 6-1) and Turner Vaughn (6-2, 6-0) won singles. Russel Harrington/Barroso (8-3), Pisciotta/Wade Ferrell (8-2) and Vaughn/Owen Barr (8-1) dominated doubles to clinch the match. The state tournament seeds will be announced Sunday.
The varsity boys tennis team netted their second victory, 7-2, over Grace Christian Monday at the Kildaire Farms Racquet & Swim Club in Cary. Joseph Pisciotta (6-1, 6-3), Owen Barr (6-1, 6-4), Turner Vaughn (6-3, 6-1) and Wade Ferrell (6-3, 6-1) gave the Warriors a 4-2 lead after singles. Barr/Russel Harrington (8-6), Pisciotta/Ferrell (8-4) and Vaughn/Banks Avram (8-0) swept doubles to clinch the match. “We went with a bit of an unusual lineup and it worked out,” said coach Tyler Hoagland, whose team is 2-6. “It was a great start to the final week of our season.”
The Warriors varsity boys tennis team won its first match this spring, 9-0, over Grace Christian Thursday at the Satellite Athletic Complex. St. David’s swept singles behind Russel Harrington (6-1, 6-4), Alex Barroso (6-1, 6-1), Joseph Pisciotta (6-1, 6-0), Owen Barr (6-2, 6-0), Turner Vaughn (6-0, 6-0) and Banks Avrum (6-4, 6-4). Everybody played great, but Banks had the match of the day,” said coach Tyler Hoagland. “He was down 4-1 in the first set and battled back to win five straight games for the victory. That clinched the match for us as his was the last singles match to finish. I’m really proud of how everybody competed today.” Harrington/Barroso (8-4), Pisciotta/Wade Ferrell (8-0) and Barr/Vaughn (8-3) completed the sweep with doubles victories.
